Please answer one or more of the 10 questions below. Speak as if you are helping a stranger who may need your advice.
Perhaps answer with a story, advice or intuitions you've picked up on the way. Don't worry about being too mundane or too profound, all types of answers are welcome.
As you answer, remember you are an expert in your own experiences and what they have taught you. Perhaps speak how you would if a loved one were to ask you these questions. Alternatively, you could answer as if you are giving a past version of yourself advice.
Whoever you may imagine listening, ultimately a stranger will pick up the phone to your words. So as long as you feel you have shared something true, your response will be valuable.
Your response will be edited together with others answering the same question, becoming part of a shared audio. The installation will be made up of many rewired phones. Each number on the dial pad will connect to the corresponding audio answering it.
All contributions will remain anonymous. However, if you submit audio your voice will be used as it is. As we won't alter it, it may still be recognisable.
If you don't like recording your own voice, or don't have a working mic, submitting text is possible too!
If you choose to submit text, your words will be voiced by someone else and included in the recordings.
This project has been created as a way to collect the wisdom of strangers and share it with others, in the hope that it connects with whoever happens to be on the other end of the phone.
The Land Line Project will be touring festivals in the UK this summer. We are confirmed to be at Kelburn Garden Party, but watch this space for new locations…
If you want to follow the progress of the project / see what your words end up forming if you can't make it to the festivals, you can find us @thelandline.network on insta.
Festival-goers will get the chance to dial any numbers they like onto the phones and listen to the corresponding answers people have provided. They might be drawn to a specific question at that moment — truly needing the guidance. Or, they may simply be led by serendipity into your words.
The questions are deliberately open, so that no matter where someone is in their life, the responses have a chance to connect with them.
Yes, this is an evolving piece. At each festival, there will be an opportunity for visitors to leave their own wisdom, adding new voices to the project. Festivals often place people in a reflective space, outside of everyday life, and these moments can lead to unexpected insight which we hope to capture.
Thank you so much for taking part. A project like this can only exist through the openness and trust of strangers like you, and I appreciate that deeply.
Many thanks,
Annika
